The Mountain State Art and Craft Fair is proud to announce a special Independence Day performance by Hillside Brass 5+1, taking the stage on Saturday, July 4 at 1:00 PM as part of the fair’s expanded entertainment lineup celebrating Appalachian culture, heritage, and America’s 250th anniversary observance.
Comprised of talented musicians Jason Smith, Dave Porter, Joe Patton, Lucas Borges, and John Schlabach, Hillside Brass 5+1 has been performing together for more than 12 years, delighting audiences with a unique and energetic brass ensemble sound.
The group’s July 4 performance will feature an entertaining mix of classical favorites, popular tunes, traditional marches, and perhaps even a few lively polkas, making it the perfect addition to the fair’s patriotic holiday celebration.
Each member of Hillside Brass 5+1 brings an impressive musical background to the stage, having performed with both the prestigious West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Ohio Valley Symphony, showcasing a level of talent rarely found in a festival setting.
According to band spokesperson Dan Porter, the ensemble balances professionalism with a fun and approachable spirit.
“We take what we do seriously, but don’t take ourselves too seriously,” Porter said.
This special performance has been made possible through the generous support of Jackson General Hospital, whose sponsorship continues to help bring outstanding entertainment and cultural programming to fairgoers from across the region.
The 2026 Mountain State Art and Craft Fair takes place July 2–4 at Cedar Lakes Conference Center in Ripley, West Virginia, featuring more than 100 juried artisans, live heritage craft demonstrations, educational activities, expanded food experiences, and entertainment celebrating the rich traditions of Appalachia.
